Mauritius
Mauritius has white beaches, palm trees, sub-tropical forests, sunshine and friendly Creole people. The volcanic island’s 330 kms of coastline sheltered by coral reef barriers make it perfect for all water sports. Inland are rivers, waterfalls and several mountain ranges.
As the island is only 90km long by about 50km wide, it is easy to get around. Take a bus or taxi to explore the capital Port Louis, a delightful town with historical buildings. Purchase spices, ship models, shells, Sega CDs, baskets, or cotton garments from Le Caudan Waterfront or one of the busy markets. The dominant religion on the island is Hindu and colourful temples abound.
Visit cultural museums in Moka or the model ship builders and boutiques of Curepipe. Nearby is the dormant crater of Trou au Cerfs. If you’re feeling energetic, hike to the spectacular Tamarind Falls - a series of seven waterfalls.
Dance to the flamboyant beat of the Sega or sink under the ocean on the Blue Safari submarine in Trou Aux Biches to view the sea life. Visit Turtle Bay at Balaclava, a marine national park, or hurtle around the Black River Gorges in a miniature hovercraft for a thrilling ride of speed and spray. You’ll never want to leave!
